WITCHI TAI TO - Bob Roffi Tribute
Sunday, November 22, 2020
12:00pm - 2:00pm
Veteran station member Bob Roffi, who passed November 2, was WMBR's most vigilant advocate for Native American issues. One of his many radio programs was Tonto's Fury, and occasionally led Thanksgiving Day music marathons to honor the American indigenous peoples. WMBR's weeklong tribute to Roffi coincides with Thanksgiving, and so it is fitting that Subject to Change's PatNauseam focuses on Witchi Tai To, perhaps the most popular song featuring a Native American chant. Written by Jim Pepper, a native of the Kaw & Creek family, the lyrics were derived from a chant taught by Pepper's father. The song rose to #69 in 1969 by Pepper's then combo Everything is Everything. The song was covered by dozens of artists, including jazz and counter cultural pop artists. Plus, it inspired a slew of covers from UK/European twee artists at the turn of the century.
