PATNAUSEAM: MARY, MARY
Sunday, October 18, 2020
12:00pm - 2:00pm
Michael Nesmith's "Mary Mary" belongs in the pantheon of creepy stalker songs, even without RUN-DMC's irreverant cover in 1988. Originally recorded by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Nesmith's own Monkees' recorded the track for the More of the Monkees LP. The song featured Nesmith and fellow Monkee Peter Tork, but the infectious drum beat and shimmy-shake vibe is courtesy of the Wrecking Crew, the storied constellation of LA studio sharpies. Glenn Campbell, one of five credited guitarists on the song, provided the guitar riff, but acclaim is best focused on late drummer extraordinaire Hal Blaine and maracas/tambourines from Gary Coleman and Jim Gordon.
The unstoppable beat from the Pre-Fab Four inspired a wave of ersatz-freakbeat south of the border and became a populat sample within hip hop and house communities. We'll hear two hours inspired by Davy, Mike, Peter and Mickey.
