Two Hour Special and Interview with Steve Katz of The Blues Project and Blood, Sweat & Tears on WMBR's Lost & Found Program

Was aired on the program: Tuesday, September 24, 2019
12:00pm - 2:00pm

It began in Greenwich Village for guitar and harmonica player Steve Katz, who became one of the thirteen members of the Even Dozen Jug Band in 1963 for one album on Elektra. Then in '65 it was on to the Blues Project, consisting of five nice Jewish boys (Steve, Al Kooper, Roy Blumenfeld, Andy Kulberg, and Danny Kalb) creating a blues/folk/psych mix of sounds. The band lasted until 1972, but Katz and Kooper split in 1967 to found the horn-laden Blood, Sweat & Tears. The Kooper version made one album, the stunning "The Child is Father to the Man," and when he departed singer David Clayton-Thomas replaced him. This led to the blockbuster eponymous album in late '68, and the band continued on throughout the '70s, while Katz jumped ship as the album quality diminished. Steve gives an entertaining interview. The Blues Project with two original members play at Wang's in Woonsocket, RI on October 4th.
