PATNAUSEAM (PatDemic Edition): Grazin' in the Grass
Necessity is the mother of un-invention. Three minutes shy of co0ntractually mandated 30 minutes for new record, South African trumpeter Hugh Masakela turned to actor/friend Philemon Hou to graft a new melody onto a "Mr. Bull No. 4", by Freddie Gumbi. The brassy sunshine pop was a joyous #1 smash in 1968. Less than a year later, Gumbi's novelty song climbed the charts again, this time with lyrics provided by West Coast male-female soul vocal outfit Friends of Distinction. We'll hear two hours to help you digest Thanksgiving leftovers.
